Our Projects

At Groundwork RVA, we are dedicated to creating a greener, more sustainable Richmond through innovative projects that transform urban spaces and engage the community. Our initiatives focus on environmental restoration, community development, and youth empowerment. Explore our current and past projects to see how we’re making a difference.

Urban Greening and Tree Planting

Our urban greening projects aim to increase the tree canopy and enhance green spaces in Richmond’s neighborhoods. We work with community members to plant and maintain trees, create gardens, and develop parks that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits. These green spaces not only beautify our city but also improve air quality, reduce heat islands, and offer places for recreation and relaxation.

Community Gardens

Groundwork RVA’s community gardens are more than just places to grow food; they are vibrant hubs for community engagement and education. We transform vacant lots into productive gardens where residents can grow fresh produce, learn about sustainable agriculture, and build stronger community connections. Our gardens promote healthy eating, food security, and environmental stewardship.

Youth Programs

Empowering the next generation of environmental leaders is at the heart of our mission. Our youth programs provide hands-on learning experiences in environmental science, leadership, and community service. Through internships, workshops, and field projects, young people gain valuable skills and knowledge while contributing to meaningful projects that improve their neighborhoods.

River and Stream Restoration

Our river and stream restoration projects aim to enhance the health and biodiversity of Richmond’s waterways. By removing invasive species, planting native vegetation, and stabilizing stream banks, we help restore natural habitats and improve water quality. These efforts not only support local wildlife but also create more resilient ecosystems that benefit the entire community.

Green Infrastructure

Implementing green infrastructure solutions is key to managing stormwater and reducing urban flooding. Our projects include installing rain gardens, permeable pavements, and bioswales that naturally filter and absorb rainwater. These initiatives help mitigate the impacts of heavy rainfall, protect our waterways, and create greener, more sustainable urban environments.

Climate Safe Neighborhoods

As part of the Climate Safe Neighborhoods (CSN) partnership, Groundwork RVA is working with residents and stakeholders to understand the relationship between the city's history of race-based housing segregation and the impacts of climate change.
