At the intersection of health, climate, workforce development, and racial equity stand our city’s young people.
And behind them, stands Groundwork RVA.

Founded in 2013 by a dedicated group of environmentally focused community volunteers, Groundwork RVA has grown into one of the principal organizations in Richmond providing a platform for youth of color to step into and be heard in the urban environmental conversation. Our work in youth-centered racial justice and urban greening is critical, timely, and growing. By empowering youth with environmental knowledge and green job skills that serve them in work and in life, we are also making our city landscape a healthier, more climate resilient, urban environment for all residents.
Groundwork RVA addresses inequities in employment, environment, and health by empowering Black and Brown young people in Richmond to drive change—bolstering their skills and leveraging their labors to transform blighted and neglected spaces into vibrant public assets. As agents of change, not just beneficiaries of projects, young people are developing the skills, voice, and values that translate into effective advocacy and meaningful career opportunities for them, and a greener, better Richmond for us all.
OUR MISSION
To cultivate the next generation of urban conservationists in Richmond, Virginia.
Groundwork RVA works with Richmond youth and communities to facilitate environmental, economic, and social well-being in neighborhoods by changing places, changing lives, and changing systems.
OUR VISION
In our ideal future, a greener Richmond works for everyone in our city, with the benefits of clean, healthy urban environments and economic opportunity widely shared.

Our Guiding Principles
A Greener Richmond
Youth Prepared for Success
Too many young people are growing up without the twenty-first century skills or workforce development opportunities they need to escape the spiral of poverty. Youth disconnection is an outcome years in the making with Black and Brown youth in highly segregated metro areas disproportionately effected. The consequences of youth disconnection are grave: a labor force with too few skilled workers, greater need for public assistance, high costs of crime, incarceration and poor health; and a heightened risk that the next generation will be caught in the same cycle.
